Go Hunt – Elk Hunting is Great!
There are many important things to consider when deciding on a hunt. Elk hunting, like many sports, is more successful with good planning. The amount of time you spend planning your hunt will be rewarded many times over – once the hunt begins. There are many decisions to be made. The best place to start is with How, When, and Where? They many seem like easy questions with easy answers – but it is not as simple as it may look.
I put “How” first, because for many, that is carved in stone. You know that you want to either bow hunt, hunt with a muzzleloader (black powder), or hunt with a rifle. Yes, you could be flexible (that’s great), but for most there is no options here. Your “How” answer will affect the When and Where. If you want to hunt rifle, you need to check the rifle season for the area you want to hunt.
You need to refine you When and Where to the exact time and place. Each area will have definate laws regulating not only when you can hunt Elk – but when. There are definite seasons that licenses must be purchase for the When and Where. You should visit the wildlife management site for each potential Where to see if your When and How match up.
Many Elk Hunts are planned a year in advance. That allows you the time to make your decisions and get the necessary legalities out of the way. Some licenses are sold by the “draw” method – the sooner you apply the better your chances.
You will also want to decide if you want to use an Outfitter. There is a choice of whether you plan to go on a Self Guided hunt or a Full Guided hunt. You can aslo opt for a “Drop Camp” – the Elk Outfitter packs you in and out and you provide your food and supplies. The full hunt usually also includes food and a guide. The choice is yours.
