Elk Bowhunting – Success Tips to Discover
It’s time for Elk Bowhunting – Elk Archery Season is here! I hope you have your Elk Hunt all planned, and are packing your gear. Got your bow? Good – and bring a back up, too -just in case. I think it’s easier to just bring 2 complete identical bow set ups. That way, you know you are always ready and do not have to worry about packing spare items – you have spare everything.
Remember, Elk Archery season is not for crossbows. They are generally only allowed to be used during Rifle Season. It is for handheld and compound bows. Check the specific regulations regarding Elk Bowhunting in the area you will be bowhunting – they do vary. There will be minimum draw requirements and limiting of electronic equipment that can be attached to the bow.
Elk Bowhunting season has the extra advantage of occurring during full rut (mating season). Elk are much more vocal during this time and will follow and answer a call more eagerly. If you are going to use an Elk call – make sure you can do it well – or do not do it at all. Elk may be big animals, but they are smart big animals.
I hope you have practiced. I would suggest pulling at least a 50lb. draw. My choice shots for Elk Bowhunting are either double lung or behind the shoulder. You want to make your shot is quick and clean. My motto is – If you’re not 100% sure about the shot – don’t take it – wait for a better one.
What I really like about Elk Bowhunting the best is the additional challenge it provides. You have to get so much closer when you bowhunt. The stealth and tracking that it requires is great. I also like the fact that there are fewer hunters to compete with and you do not have to wear “Blaze Orange” – I’m pretty sure the Elk have figured that one out.
